Skintap for Blender

Blender 5.2 in Pose Mode with Blender Studio's Rain in a walking pose. The cursor is on her jeans at the left thigh, and Skintap's label next to it reads 'FK-Thigh_Parent.L' and, below, 'moves DEF-Thigh1.L on GEO-rain-jeans'. The thigh control just selected is highlighted. On the right, the Skintap tab: Pick Bones on Mesh, Pick Deform Bones, 'Shortcut: Shift+Alt+Q, Esc to finish', then Duplicate Chain, Mirror Chain, Sides and the Rename tools

Bones that disappear inside the mesh? Click the posed mesh and Skintap selects the bone that moves it, with no setup. Copy or mirror a bone chain without renaming every .001 copy by hand.

$14, one-time, 12 months of updates and support included, source included (GPL-3.0-or-later). Blender 4.2 LTS and later; tested on 4.2 LTS and 5.2 LTS, on Linux.

Above: Rain, Blender Studio's free production character, posed in Pose Mode. Skintap's picker is running: the label names the control under the cursor and the deform bone it moves on her jeans, and the click has just selected that control.

How these images were made

Every image and GIF on this page is a capture of a real Blender 5.2.3 LTS window on Linux at 1920x960 and UI scale 1.4, with Skintap 1.0.2 installed from its zip through Blender's extension installer (the Install from Disk path). The character is Rain v3.3 as downloaded from studio.blender.org (CC BY 4.0, credit below), in her own file and rig. By script, between shots, we switched her arms and legs to FK, set her rig's Quality to 2 (Subdivision Surface level 2 on every piece of clothing and the body), posed her on her FK controls and set the view; for the chain images we added a three-bone hair strand and a three-bone ribbon to her rig, showed only their bone collection, and hid the viewport's navigation buttons. Every hover, click, Shift-click, menu and key press (Shift+Alt+Q, Esc, G, Shift+D) is a real input event sent to the window; every label, selection, name and status-bar report is Skintap's own. The GIFs were recorded one frame per pointer step and play at 30 frames per second: on this machine Blender draws the viewport in software, slower than that, so the motion here is smoother than it was live. The virtual display has no mouse cursor, so the arrow is drawn into each frame at the pointer's real position.

Where it matters. In Pose Mode, Blender's own click selects a bone only where the cursor lands on that bone's drawn shape, not on the body or the clothes around it. When the controls sit inside the body, under a top or behind the hair, most of the character selects nothing. On grids of points laid over two posed characters, Blender's click selected nothing at 25% to 67% of the points (with the armature's In Front on or off). Over the same points, Skintap selected a bone that moves the clicked spot at 208 of 208 on a Rigify rig and at 159 of 165 on Rain.
Two captures of the same view of Rain, side by side. Left, labelled 'Blender's own click: nothing selected': the cursor on her jeans at the left thigh after a plain click in Pose Mode; no bone is highlighted. Right, labelled 'Skintap: FK-Thigh_Parent.L selected': the same spot with Skintap's picker, the label 'FK-Thigh_Parent.L, moves DEF-Thigh1.L on GEO-rain-jeans' and the thigh control highlighted
Same spot on Rain's jeans. Left: Blender's own click in Pose Mode selected nothing (her thigh control is drawn as a ring further down the leg, and the click landed on no bone shape). Right: Skintap selected the control that moves that spot. The labels above the two captures are ours; everything below them is Blender's window.
Rain in Pose Mode. Shift+Alt+Q starts the picker; the cursor moves over her upper arm (label FK-Upperarm_Parent.L, moves DEF-Upperarm1.L on GEO-rain-body), her forearm (FK-Forearm.L), which is clicked and highlighted, down to her jeans at the thigh (FK-Thigh_Parent.L, moves DEF-Thigh1.L on GEO-rain-jeans), which is Shift-clicked and added, then over her shin (FK-Shin.L on GEO-rain-jeans) and her shoe (FK-Foot.L, moves DEF-Foot.L on GEO-rain-shoes)
Hover to read which control moves the spot under the cursor, on her body, jeans and shoes; click selects it, Shift-click adds. After the two clicks, FK-Forearm.L and FK-Thigh_Parent.L were selected.
Who doesn't need it. Several of these jobs already work in Blender. Weight Paint mode lets you click bones while painting. Symmetrize mirrors a chain, with its constraints and bone collections, when the names already carry a side such as .L/.R or _l/_r. Auto-Name Left/Right adds sides. Batch Rename does find and replace. A rig whose controls sit outside the body is easy to click without help. In those cases the buyer is paying for four things: picking in Pose Mode on the deformed mesh with no setup; a copy of a chain that takes the next number instead of .001 in one step; a mirror of bones that have no side yet in one step; and renaming in chain order. If you don't need those, keep your money.

What it does

Every tool says what it did in the status bar, or, when it can't run, why and what to do; each run is one undo step.

In Blender, for real

Rain's left upper arm under the picker: the label reads FK-Upperarm_Parent.L, moves DEF-Upperarm1.L on GEO-rain-body. Esc ends the picker, the Pick Deform Bones checkbox in the Skintap tab is clicked and ticked, Shift+Alt+Q starts the picker again, and the same spot now reads DEF-Upperarm1.L, on GEO-rain-body (DEF-Upperarm1.L is in the hidden bone collection 'Body Deform Main')
Her upper arm's deform bone sits in a hidden bone collection, so Skintap selects the visible FK control that moves it. With Pick Deform Bones ticked, the same spot selects the deform bone itself, and the label says it is hidden.
Edit Mode, the side of Rain's head with a three-bone hair strand named hair_01_01, hair_01_02, hair_01_03 selected. Duplicate Chain is clicked in the Skintap tab; the copy is moved back with G, Y. Duplicate Chain is clicked again and the second copy moved. The bone names on screen read hair_01_01..03, hair_02_01..03 and hair_03_01..03
Duplicate Chain, twice, on a hair strand added to Rain's rig. The status bar said "Duplicated 3 bones in 1 chain: hair_01_01 .. hair_01_03 -> hair_02_01 .. hair_02_03", then the same for hair_03. Each copy was moved with G, Y.
The same hair strands. hair_03 is copied with Blender's own Shift+D and moved: the copy's names read hair_03_01.001, hair_03_02.001, hair_03_03.001. Fix .001 Names is clicked in the Skintap tab and the names become hair_04_01, hair_04_02, hair_04_03
Copied with Blender's own Shift+D, the strand is named hair_03_01.001 to .003.001. Fix .001 Names: "Fixed 3 names: hair_03_01.001 -> hair_04_01; hair_03_02.001 -> hair_04_02; hair_03_03.001 -> hair_04_03".
Edit Mode, Rain's hips with a three-bone ribbon named ribbon_01, ribbon_02, ribbon_03 on her left hip, selected. The Sides menu in the Skintap tab is opened, showing .L / .R, _L / _R, _l / _r and Left / Right, and .L / .R is chosen. Mirror Chain is clicked: a mirrored ribbon appears on her right hip, and the names read ribbon_01.L..03.L on the left and ribbon_01.R..03.R on the right
A ribbon with no side in its names, mirrored with .L / .R: "Mirrored 3 bones in 1 chain: ribbon_01.L .. ribbon_03.L -> ribbon_01.R .. ribbon_03.R. Source renamed to carry its side". Rain's file has the armature's X-Axis Mirror option on, as many production files do; the mirror is correct with it on.
The Pose menu open over Rain, with the Skintap submenu showing Pick Bones on Mesh (Shift Alt Q), Duplicate Chain, Mirror Chain, Rename Chain and Fix .001 Names; the Skintap tab is open in the sidebar on the right
Where it lives: the Skintap tab in the 3D Viewport sidebar (N), the Pose > Skintap and Armature > Skintap menus, and Shift+Alt+Q in Pose Mode (changeable in Preferences).

Character: Rain Rig (CC) Blender Foundation | studio.blender.org, used under CC BY 4.0. We posed her, switched her limbs to FK, and added the hair strand and ribbon bones for the chain images. Rain is not included with Skintap, and Blender Studio does not endorse it.

Which control a click selects

Skintap selects the nearest visible bone that drives the spot, so the answer depends on the rig. Tested on a Rigify-generated human rig with a body and a separate jacket, Blender 4.2 and 5.2, a click from the front on each point selects:

A one-page quick start: Skintap quick start.

Install

  1. After checkout, download skintap-1.0.2.zip from the link in Polar's email. Install the zip itself; do not unzip it. (If your browser unzips downloads by itself, as Safari can, turn that off and download again.)
  2. In Blender (4.2 or newer), open Edit > Preferences > Get Extensions.
  3. Open the drop-down menu (⌄) at the top right, choose Install from Disk... and pick the zip. Dragging the zip onto Blender's window also works.
  4. Press N in the 3D Viewport and open the Skintap tab.

If Get Extensions asks about internet access, Continue Offline is fine: Skintap needs none.
